What "best AI detector" means depends on the job

The best AI detector is the one whose output you can act on. For a content team that means passage-level highlighting, a reason for every flag, and a way to fix the flagged text without destroying the facts. For an academic integrity office it means something else entirely, and several tools on this list are built for that market. Humanizeo is not; academic use is prohibited under our terms. Prices and limits below were checked in August 2026 against the vendors' own pages and recent reviews. They change often. Where a figure was inconsistent across sources we have said "check their pricing page" rather than guess.

Strong multilingual coverage and a big education footprint. Paid plans start around $10 a month. 3. Copyleaks

An enterprise-grade platform where AI detection sits alongside a serious plagiarism engine, with API access and LMS integrations. Credits cover about 250 words each; the Personal plan is listed around $16.99 monthly, with a limited free allowance. Well suited to compliance-heavy organisations. 4. Originality.ai

Built for web publishers and agencies, which makes it the closest in audience to us. One credit scans 100 words; Pro is $14.95 a month for 2,000 credits, with pay-as-you-go packs available. It bundles plagiarism, fact-check aids and a readability score, and its detection is aggressive, which some publishers like and some find produces too many false positives on human copy. No free tier beyond trials, and no built-in rewrite.

5. Grammarly AI Detector

Free within Grammarly, checking around 1,000 words (about 10,000 characters) per scan according to third-party reviews, and convenient if your writers already live in Grammarly. It returns a percentage with light highlighting and no real explanation of why. Fine as a sanity check. Not a review tool. 6. QuillBot AI Detector

Free, unlimited checks at up to 1,200 words per scan, with a per-sentence view and a companion paraphraser. Popular, fast, and honestly decent for a quick look at a short piece. The 1,200-word cap means a long feature has to be split, and the paraphraser is a synonym-level rewrite rather than a detect-rewrite-recheck loop. 7. ZeroGPT

The free detector most people try first. Large per-scan allowance (15,000 characters, per the counter on their homepage), sentence highlighting, many languages. 8. Winston AI

A polished detector aimed at publishers and education, with PDF reports and plagiarism, plus AI image detection. The free trial is a one-time 2,000-credit allowance (one credit per word for text), and paid plans start from about $10 a month; see their pricing page. Reporting is a genuine strength. 9. Scribbr

Free, unlimited checks at 1,200 words each, with a premium tier that adds plagiarism. Scribbr is squarely an academic tool; that is who it is built and marketed for. Fine for what it is. 10. Sapling

A developer-friendly detector with a clean API and per-sentence scores. The free web tool caps at 2,000 characters a query, roughly 350 words, which is fine for testing and too small for real drafts. Good pick if you are integrating detection into your own product. Not a review interface for editors.

11. Pangram

A newer entrant with a strong accuracy reputation in independent tests and a small free daily allowance; paid plans start at $20 a month, with API pricing by word volume. Worth watching, especially for teams that care most about raw accuracy. Explanations are limited and there is no rewrite loop.

How AI detectors work

Every detector on this list is doing some version of the same thing: measuring how predictable and how regular a piece of text is, then mapping that to a probability. The methods split into three rough camps.

Perplexity and burstiness. The classic approach. Run the text through a language model and ask how surprised the model is by each word (perplexity). Machine text is low-surprise, because it was generated by picking likely words. Then measure how much that surprise varies from sentence to sentence (burstiness). Human writing spikes and dips; machine writing hums along evenly.

Trained classifiers. Feed a model millions of labelled human and machine samples and let it learn the difference. Accurate on text that resembles the training data, brittle on text that does not, and opaque: a classifier can tell you "87%" but rarely why.

Stylometric heuristics. Explicit, measurable features: sentence-length variance, paragraph shape, contraction rate, stock-phrase frequency, repeated openers. Less fashionable, fully explainable, and the reason a detector can show you the tell rather than just the number.

How we judged

Four questions, all from the point of view of someone reviewing drafts before publication.

  1. Can I see which sentences flagged? A document-level score is close to useless for editing.
  2. Does it tell me why? A highlight without a reason still leaves the writer guessing.
  3. What happens after the flag? Detection is half the job. A tool that stops there hands you a problem, not a fix.
  4. What does it cost to run daily? Monthly allowances and per-scan caps matter more than headline prices when you are checking twenty pieces a week.

We did not rank on raw accuracy claims, because vendor accuracy numbers are measured on different test sets and are not comparable, and because independent tests shift with every model release. If accuracy on adversarial text is your single priority, Pangram and Originality.ai deserve a close look. There is no settled answer, because vendors measure accuracy on different test sets and independent results move with every new model. Pangram and Originality.ai score well in recent third-party tests on adversarial text. For editorial work we would argue explainability matters as much as raw accuracy: a detector that shows which sentence flagged and why is one you can act on.

What is the best free AI detector?

How does an AI detector work?

Most measure how predictable and how regular the text is. Perplexity-based tools ask how surprised a language model is by each word; classifiers are trained on labelled samples; stylometric tools measure sentence-length variance, paragraph shape, contraction rate and stock phrases. What does an AI detector look for?

Even sentence lengths, paragraphs of identical shape, very few contractions in casual prose, overused vocabulary such as delve or tapestry, repeated sentence openers, and hedged, generic conclusions.
